Language requirements | English Italian ITALIAN You can apply to this programme even if you have yet to obtain a language certification, but in order to complete your enrolment you will need to provide one or take a preliminary Italian language test organised either on Skype or on campus before the academic year begins. You are exempted from needing to provide evidence of your proficiency in Italian if: Chinese Marco Polo students can provide language certification indicating either a B1- or a B2-level knowledge of Italian. Chinese Marco Polo students enrolling with a certified B1-level knowledge of Italian must achieve a certified B2-level knowledge of the language by the end of the first year of their studies. Overview
This programme trains you as an expert in philology, ancient literatures, ancient history and archaeology. Depending on the curriculum you choose, you acquire specialised skills and methods in archaeology, ancient art and material culture history, languages and literatures of ancient Greek and Latin civilisations or ancient history (including Greek, Roman and ancient East history).
This programme offers two curricula, each of which allows you to choose from two paths. Explore this programme’s study plans (Study > Study plan > Enrolled in the 2024/2025 academic year):
- Ancient Philology, Literatures and History: History Path; Philology and Literature Path;
- Archaeology: Europe and Mediterranean Path; Western Asia and Eastern Mediterranean Path.
Your academic activities benefit from state-of-the-art technologies and methodologies (e.g., digital humanities), allowing you to access texts and archives online and to use specifically designed analytical software.
You can further explore your field of interest through excavation experiences, internships in epigraphy, digital humanities workshops and museum internships. Upon graduation, you will be able to assume a position of responsibility in institutions such as museums, local administration, archives, publishing houses, or obtain teaching qualifications for middle and secondary schools.
PLEASE NOTE: In mid-March 2025, with the official confirmation of the university’s academic offer for the 2025/2026 academic year, this master’s degree programme will change its name into “Scienze dell’antichità: archeologia, letterature e storia”.
Double Degree available

Programme structure

You can apply to carry out the double degree outlined above, which would involve spending one of the two years of study at our partner university. Alternatively, you can request to spend one or two semesters abroad through Ca’ Foscari’s exchange programmes.
Your curricular internship can be carried out either in Italy or abroad.
